Name Compatibility Calculator: Name compatibility in numerology turns each of two names into a single number and then asks how well those two numbers go together. The calculator below does it with the Chaldean letter values used across this site, gives you a score and a band from Excellent to Moderate, and prints every letter’s value so you can check the arithmetic yourself. It works for any two people: a couple, two friends, a business partnership, even a parent and child.
Before you trust any number, including ours, it helps to know how much depends on method. In our own test on 625 couples made from common Indian first names, the Chaldean and Pythagorean letter systems put a couple in the same band only 28% of the time, and switching from first names to full names changed the band for about 7 couples in 10. Different sites also use different rules for which numbers suit each other, and on some pairs they give opposite answers. This page shows you exactly which rules it uses, where other sources disagree, and why the result is best read as a light-hearted conversation starter, not a verdict on a relationship.

What Is Name Compatibility in Numerology?
Every name can be reduced to a number, which Indian numerology calls the Namank. Name compatibility compares two of those numbers. The idea is that some numbers share a temperament and fit together easily, while others pull in different directions and need more patience. Because a name is what people actually call you, the name number is usually read as the side of you that others meet first, so name compatibility is often described as how two people come across together rather than how their deeper natures match.
It is worth separating this from three things it is often confused with. The first is date-of-birth compatibility, which compares numbers from two birth dates instead of two names and is covered by our Love Compatibility Calculator. The second is naam se kundli milan, the Vedic astrology method many Indian families use when birth details are missing, which takes the first syllable of each name to find a nakshatra and then scores the 36 gunas of Ashtakoot matching. That is a separate system with no link to numerology’s letter values. The third is games such as FLAMES and many “love calculators”, some of which say openly that they adjust a count of shared letters to produce a playful percentage. This calculator is none of those: it is a fixed table of scores between name numbers, and the same two names will always give the same answer.
How Is Name Compatibility Calculated?
Each name is converted with the Chaldean chart, in which letters carry values from 1 to 8 and no letter is worth 9:
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A, I, J, Q, Y | B, K, R | C, G, L, S | D, M, T | E, H, N, X | U, V, W | O, Z | F, P |
The letters of each name are added and reduced to a single digit, and the two digits are looked up in this page’s score chart. Here is a worked example you can type into the calculator: Rahul and Priya.
- Rahul. R(2) + A(1) + H(5) + U(6) + L(3) = 17, then 1 + 7 = 8.
- Priya. P(8) + R(2) + I(1) + Y(1) + A(1) = 13, then 1 + 3 = 4.
- Score. In the chart further down, 4 and 8 score 88, which falls in the Excellent band.
The bands are fixed: 85 or more is Excellent, 75 to 84 Very Good, 65 to 74 Good and 55 to 64 Moderate. The chart’s scores run only from 55 to 90, so no pair of names ever lands below Moderate, and the calculator’s lowest band, Challenging, never actually appears. It is also symmetric: it makes no difference whose name you type first. The percentage sign is a convention, not a probability. A score of 88 means “near the top of this page’s own scale”, not “an 88% chance of anything”.
One more point matters in practice: enter the same kind of name for both people. If you type one full name and one first name, the calculator reminds you, because the answer usually changes, as the next section shows.

Why Another Calculator May Give You a Different Match
Name compatibility has more disagreement built into it than almost any other numerology tool, because three separate choices all change the answer: the letter system, the name you enter, and the rules for which numbers suit each other.
The letter system
Some sites use the Pythagorean chart, which numbers the alphabet 1 to 9 in order, instead of the Chaldean chart. For full names, Rahul Sharma and Priya Verma give 6 and 4 in Chaldean (33, then 6; and 31, then 4), a score of 84, Very Good. In Pythagorean they give 3 and 2 (48, then 12, then 3; and 56, then 11, then 2), which this page’s chart would score 66, Good. Across our 625 first-name couples, the two letter systems put a couple in the same band only 28.2% of the time.
The name you enter
First name, full name, nickname or married name: each gives its own number. The couple above is Excellent on first names and Very Good on full names. In our larger test, covering more than half a million combinations of first names and surnames, the band changed between first names and full names 71.7% of the time. Sources disagree on which to use; one Indian calculator recommends the name each person is most commonly called by, while other numerologists insist on the full name as written on documents.
The rules for which numbers suit each other
This is the biggest source of disagreement. Here are eight pairs, as read by this page and by four other approaches: the Western “number groups” of 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; and 3, 6 and 9; the planetary friendship table used on our date-based calculators; one Indian calculator that also uses Chaldean numbers and planetary rulers; and one widely used Hindi table based on Cheiro’s method, which sorts numbers into best friends, friends, neutral and enemies.
| Pair | This page | Western number groups | This site’s planetary table | An Indian Chaldean calculator | A Hindi Cheiro-style table |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 and 5 | 85, Excellent | Same group | 5 lists 1 as friendly; 1 does not list 5 | Neutral | Enemies |
| 2 and 6 | 88, Excellent | Different groups | Neither lists the other | Neutral | Best friends |
| 3 and 6 | 88, Excellent | Same group | Neither lists the other | Challenging | Best friends |
| 6 and 9 | 90, Excellent | Same group | Neither lists the other | Not listed | Best friends |
| 2 and 4 | 86, Excellent | Same group | Neither lists the other | Not listed | Friends |
| 5 and 6 | 64, Moderate | Different groups | Each lists the other | Highly compatible | Neutral |
| 1 and 6 | 62, Moderate | Different groups | Neither lists the other | Challenging | Friends |
| 3 and 9 | 88, Excellent | Same group | Each lists the other | Highly compatible | Best friends |
Only the last row agrees across the board. Look at 1 and 5: this page rates it Excellent, the Western groups agree, the Indian calculator calls it neutral and the Hindi table calls the two numbers enemies. For 5 and 6 the pattern runs the other way: Mercury and Venus are natural friends in Vedic astrology, so the planetary table lists each as friendly to the other and the Indian calculator rates the pair highly, yet this page scores it Moderate.
The sources are not always consistent even with themselves. The Indian calculator describes 2 and 6 as exceptional harmony in one paragraph and lists the same pair as neutral in its own table further down. The Hindi table treats 3 and 5 as enemies of themselves, so two people who are both 3s are “enemies”, and its letter chart lists M under both 4 and 8. Western sources disagree among themselves too: one major Western site’s Life Path compatibility guide lists 1’s best matches as 1, 4, 8 and 9, not the 1, 5 and 7 of the number groups.
Where does this page’s own chart sit? It broadly follows the Western groups: all nine same-group pairs score between 82 and 90. But it is not a strict group chart, because 9 of the 27 cross-group pairs also score 80 or more, including 2 and 6 at 88. It is also different from the planetary friendship table used by our Love Compatibility and Lucky Number calculators, so the same two numbers can read differently on different pages of this site. We would rather show you that than hide it. Pick one method, understand what it is based on, and do not collect the best answer from five sites.
How Each Name Number Behaves in a Relationship
For each number: how it tends to show up with a partner, where that goes wrong, its highest and lowest scores on this page’s chart, and where other sources read it differently.
Name Number 1: The Sun
A 1 name is read as the one who sets the direction: books the tickets, picks the restaurant, pushes the plan forward. Partners often find that reassuring at first. Where it goes wrong is deciding for two without asking, and hearing a different opinion as a challenge rather than information, so the quieter partner slowly stops offering one. Two 1s together score 78 here: two captains, lively but prone to standoffs. On this page, 1 scores highest with 5 (85), 7 (82) and 3 (80), and lowest with 8 (58), 4 (60) and 6 (62). Sources split sharply: the Hindi Cheiro-style table calls 1 and 5 enemies and 1 and 6 friends, the exact reverse of this chart.
Name Number 2: The Moon
A 2 name is read as attentive, gentle and good at reading moods, the partner who notices something is wrong before it is said. Where it goes wrong is keeping the peace at the cost of its own needs: agreeing now, resenting later, and sulking instead of saying what hurt. The 2 in a pair often becomes the one who apologises first even when it was not their fault. On this page, 2 scores highest with 6 (88), 4 (86), 2 (85) and 8 (84), and lowest with 5 (55) and 7 (60). That 5 result is notable, because the planetary table lists 5 as friendly for 2, and the Moon counts Mercury as a friend in Vedic astrology.
Name Number 3: Jupiter
A 3 name brings fun, conversation and generosity: the partner who plans the outing, remembers the joke and fills a quiet house with people. Where it goes wrong is using humour to dodge a serious conversation, spreading attention across too many friends and plans, or promising more than gets done. Partners of a 3 sometimes feel they are one guest among many. On this page, 3 scores highest with 6 and 9 (both 88) and 5 (84), and lowest with 4 (55), 7 (58) and 8 (60). The Hindi table lists 8 as an enemy of 3, which agrees, but it also lists 3 as an enemy of itself, while this page gives two 3s a comfortable 82.
Name Number 4: Rahu
A 4 name is read as loyal, practical and dependable: the planner who handles the rent, the repairs and the paperwork. Where it goes wrong is rigidity, where there is one right way to load the dishwasher and it is the 4’s way, and an occasional stubborn streak that surprises people who thought they knew the 4 well. Affection may be shown through reliability rather than words, and a partner who needs to hear it can feel short-changed. On this page, 4 scores highest with 8 (88), 2 (86) and 4 (85), and lowest with 3 and 5 (both 55) and 1 (60). The planetary table lists 8 as friendly for 4, but 8 does not list 4 back.
Name Number 5: Mercury
A 5 name is lively, curious and quick, the partner who suggests the trip, the new restaurant and the change of plan. Where it goes wrong is restlessness: avoiding the “where is this going” conversation, getting bored with routine, and treating commitment as a loss of freedom. A 5 can also talk its way out of an argument without resolving it. On this page, 5 scores highest with 1 (85), and with 3 and 7 (both 84), and lowest with 2 and 4 (both 55) and 8 (60). This is the number where traditions disagree most: the planetary table and the Indian calculator both favour 5 with 6, which this page scores only 64, and the Hindi table lists 5 as an enemy of 1, 2 and itself.
Name Number 6: Venus
A 6 name is read as warm, devoted and home-making, the partner who remembers birthdays, cooks for the family and makes a house feel lived in. Where it goes wrong is over-giving and then keeping score, or caring so closely that it turns into managing the other person’s life. On this page, 6 has the single highest score on the whole chart, 90 with 9, and scores 88 with 2, 3 and another 6, but only 62 with 1 and 64 with 5 and 7. So 6 does not blend warmly with everyone here, whatever you may read elsewhere. The planetary table lists 5 and 8 as friendly for 6, and neither of them appears among 6’s top scores on this page.
Name Number 7: Ketu
A 7 name is deep, private and loyal once trust is earned, the partner who prefers one long conversation to a crowded party. Where it goes wrong is withdrawal: going quiet instead of saying what is wrong, over-analysing the relationship privately, and leaving the other person guessing. A 7 can feel understood without ever saying a word, and assume the partner feels the same, which is not always so. On this page, 7 scores highest with 5 (84), and with 1 and another 7 (both 82), and lowest with 3 and 8 (both 58) and 2 (60). The Hindi table is far kinder to 7, listing no enemies at all.
Name Number 8: Saturn
An 8 name is committed, protective and responsible, the partner who shows love by providing and planning for the long term. Where it goes wrong is work always coming first, control over money turning into control over decisions, and love expressed only as duty, with the words left unsaid. Partners of an 8 sometimes feel respected but not cherished. On this page, 8 scores highest with 4 (88), 2 (84), and 6 and another 8 (both 82), and lowest with 1 and 7 (both 58). The Hindi table lists 3 as 8’s only enemy and treats almost every other number as neutral.
Name Number 9: Mars
A 9 name is generous, idealistic and passionate, the partner who stands up for you in public and gives freely to people in need. Where it goes wrong is temper that flares and fades, a habit of rescuing people, and a tendency to care about big causes while forgetting small daily kindnesses at home. On this page, 9 scores highest with 6 (90) and with 3 and another 9 (both 88), and lowest with 4 and 8 (both 66). It is the only number on the chart with no Moderate pairing at all, which makes 9, not 6, the most broadly compatible number on this page.

What Our Own Calculation Shows
We ran the calculator’s own logic on every possible pair of name numbers, and on 625 couples made by pairing 25 common Indian male first names with 25 common female first names. For the full-name and surname questions we added 30 common surnames, which gave 543,750 combinations. This is our own calculation on a sample we chose, not a survey of real couples.
| Band | All 81 number pairings | Our 625 first-name couples |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent (85 to 90) | 22.2% | 28.6% |
| Very Good (75 to 84) | 35.8% | 30.6% |
| Good (65 to 74) | 9.9% | 9.4% |
| Moderate (55 to 64) | 32.1% | 31.4% |
| Challenging (below 55) | 0% | 0% |
Four things stand out.
- The scale is generous. Nearly 6 in 10 couples score Very Good or Excellent, and about 1 in 3 score Moderate, the lowest band that exists in practice. If your result is Moderate, you are in the same band as a third of all couples.
- Method beats names. The Chaldean and Pythagorean systems agreed on the band for only 28.2% of our first-name couples, and switching from first names to full names changed the band 71.7% of the time.
- Marriage changes the number. In the same combinations, the band changed in 65.2% of cases when the wife’s surname changed to her husband’s, which is worth knowing if you are wondering which name to use after marriage.
- Traditions rarely agree. Of the 45 possible pairings of numbers, only 8 are rated positively by this page, by the Hindi Cheiro-style table and by this site’s planetary table in both directions. Nine pairs this page rates Very Good or Excellent, including its top score of 6 and 9, are not linked at all in the planetary table used on our date-based pages.
Which Names Should You Enter?
- Use the same kind of name for both. Both first names, or both full names. Mixing the two compares unlike things, and the calculator will remind you if it spots it.
- First names describe everyday closeness. Many practitioners read the name you are most commonly called by as the one that shapes how two people get along day to day. Full names are more often read as the fuller, more formal picture.
- After marriage, try both surnames. The married surname changes the result about two times in three. Reading both is more honest than picking the version you like better.
- Hindi names need English letters. Both letter charts only cover A to Z, so write names the way you actually spell them in English. Spelling variants such as Pooja and Puja can give different numbers.
- For marriage matching, know which system you are using. If your family wants guna milan, that is kundli matching, by birth chart or by name through nakshatras, and a pandit or astrologer is the right person to ask. Numerology name compatibility is a different, much lighter tradition.
Some sites suggest changing a spelling to raise a compatibility score. You can find a spelling with almost any number you like, so a score that can be moved by adding a letter says very little about two people. If a spelling change interests you for its own sake, our Name Numerology Calculator shows what each version gives, and it is worth keeping official documents consistent whatever you decide.
Common Misconceptions About Name Compatibility
- “A high score means we are meant to be.” Nearly 6 in 10 couples score Very Good or better on this page. A score describes two numbers, not two people.
- “A Moderate score means it will not work.” About 1 in 3 couples land in Moderate, the lowest band this chart can produce, and many strong relationships are among them.
- “Every calculator will give us the same result.” Letter system, choice of name and pairing rules all change the answer, and traditions agree on only a handful of pairs.
- “The percentage is the chance of success.” It is a position on this page’s own 55 to 90 scale, not a probability.
- “Name compatibility is the same as kundli milan by name.” Naam se kundli milan uses nakshatras and the 36 gunas; numerology uses letter values. They are separate systems.
- “Changing a spelling will fix our match.” It changes a number. It does not change how two people treat each other.
- “Name compatibility is scientifically proven.” It is a traditional belief system, best enjoyed as a conversation starter.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is name compatibility calculated?
Each name is converted to a number with a letter chart, added up and reduced to one digit, and the two digits are looked up in a score chart. Rahul (17, then 8) and Priya (13, then 4) score 88 on this page. The calculator shows every step.
Which letter system does this calculator use?
The Chaldean system, in which letters carry values from 1 to 8, the same system used across this site’s name calculators. Many Western sites use the Pythagorean system instead, and the two put a couple in the same band only about 28% of the time in our test.
Should we use first names or full names?
Either, as long as you use the same kind for both people. Sources disagree about which matters more. In our test, the band changed between first names and full names for about 7 couples in 10, so it is worth trying both.
Does a surname change after marriage affect name compatibility?
Numerically, yes, and often. When the wife’s surname changed to her husband’s in our test combinations, the band changed about two times in three. Whether the married or maiden name matters more is a question practitioners answer differently.
Why does another website give us a different score?
Because it probably uses a different letter chart, a different name, or different rules for which numbers suit each other. Some tools also add deliberate variation to make a playful percentage. The comparison table above shows how far five approaches can disagree on the same pair.
What does the percentage mean?
It is a score on this page’s own chart, which runs from 55 to 90. It is not a probability and should not be compared with percentages from other sites, which use their own scales.
Which name numbers are most compatible?
On this page, 6 and 9 score highest at 90, followed by several pairs at 88, including 2 and 6, 3 and 6, 3 and 9, and 4 and 8. Other traditions rank pairs differently; 3 and 9 is one of the few pairings nearly every source rates well.
Is name compatibility the same as naam se kundli milan?
No. Naam se kundli milan is a Vedic astrology method that uses the first syllable of each name to find a nakshatra and then scores the 36 gunas. Numerology name compatibility uses letter values and has nothing to do with nakshatras.
Can we change a spelling to improve our score?
You can change the number, since adding or removing a letter shifts the total. But a result that can be moved by one letter says little about a relationship, and inconsistent spellings on official documents cause real problems.
Does name compatibility really work?
There is no scientific evidence that it does. It is a traditional numerology practice that many people enjoy as a light way to talk about how two people get along.
