Chaldean Name Numerology (Free): Calculate Name Number by Chaldean Name Numerology

Calculate Name Number by Chaldean Name Numerology : Your name is the one number you carry that you did not get from the calendar. People hear it, write it and sign it every day, and in the Indian tradition of name numerology it is treated as a number that shapes how the world meets you — which is why so many people in India check their Namank before naming a child, launching a business, or even adjusting the spelling of their own name.

This calculator uses the Chaldean letter table, the system Indian name numerology is built on. Enter the name you are known by and you get your Destiny number (Namank) from all its letters, your Heart’s Desire from the vowels, your Dream number from the consonants, your Habit Challenge number, and Cheiro’s reading of your compound number — with every letter’s value shown. Add your date of birth to see whether your name suits your Mulank and Bhagyank. Below, we explain what each number means, and where the traditions genuinely disagree.

The short answer: Give each letter of your name its Chaldean value (1 to 8 — no letter is ever 9), add them all, and reduce to one digit. That is your name number, or Namank. The vowels alone give your Heart’s Desire, the consonants alone your Dream number, and the number of letters your Habit Challenge.

What Is Name Numerology?

Name numerology turns the letters of a name into numbers and reads the result. It rests on an old idea — that a name is not just a label but something with its own character, repeated every time someone says it. In Indian practice the name number is read alongside the two numbers from your date of birth, the Mulank and Bhagyank, and the three together form the core of an ank jyotish reading.

The letter table used in India is called Chaldean, after the ancient Chaldeans of Babylon. It is worth being honest about that name. The table as it is used today was popularised by Cheiro (William John Warner), whose Book of Numbers appeared in 1926, and its link to ancient Babylon is a tradition rather than documented history: the Babylonians wrote in cuneiform, not the Latin alphabet, and letters such as J, U and W only became separate letters many centuries later. What is not in doubt is that Cheiro’s system became the foundation of name numerology in India, and it is the system this calculator follows.

The alternative, used by most Western websites, is the Pythagorean table, which simply numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9. The two give different results for most names — in our sample of 600 common Indian names, 88% came out with a different single number. Neither is a corrected version of the other; they are different traditions.

Your Name Numbers: Destiny, Heart’s Desire, Dream and Habit Challenge

One name produces several numbers, each drawn from a different part of it. The terms vary from site to site, so here they are with their other names.

NumberAlso calledWorked out fromWhat it describes
Destiny numberNamank, name number, ExpressionAll the lettersHow you come across in life and what you are equipped to do
Heart’s DesireSoul Urge, soul numberThe vowels onlyWhat you want inside, often privately
Dream numberPersonality, inner-dream numberThe consonants onlyThe first impression you give others
Habit ChallengeSecurity number, point of securityThe number of letters, not their valuesThe strength you fall back on in a crisis

The Destiny number is the one Indian numerologists mean by “your name number”, and it is the one read against your date of birth. The Heart’s Desire and Dream numbers split the same name in two — the soft, inward vowel sounds and the harder outer consonants — which is why they are read as the inner self and the outer self. A name also has a Hidden Passion (the value that appears most often among its letters); our Karmic Lesson Calculator shows it with your full letter count.

How Is Your Name Number Calculated?

Every letter gets a value from this table. Notice that the values run from 1 to 8 only. Cheiro’s tradition leaves 9 out of the letter table altogether — usually explained as the number being sacred — although a name can still total 9.

ValueLetters
1A, I, J, Q, Y
2B, K, R
3C, G, L, S
4D, M, T
5E, H, N, X
6U, V, W
7O, Z
8F, P
  1. Write the name as you are known by it, in English letters.
  2. Give each letter its value from the table and add them — this total is the compound number.
  3. Add the digits of the total until you reach one digit. That is your Destiny number (Namank). If you reach 11, 22 or 33 on the way, this calculator stops there — see the section on master numbers below.
  4. Repeat with only the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) for your Heart’s Desire, and only the consonants for your Dream number.
  5. Count the letters and reduce that count for your Habit Challenge.

A worked example: ROHIT VERMA

ROHIT: R(2) + O(7) + H(5) + I(1) + T(4) = 19. VERMA: V(6) + E(5) + R(2) + M(4) + A(1) = 18. The whole name totals 19 + 18 = 37, which reduces to 10 and then to 1 — Rohit’s Namank is 1, ruled by the Sun.

The vowels O(7), I(1), E(5) and A(1) total 14, giving a Heart’s Desire of 5. The consonants R, H, T, V, R and M total 23, giving a Dream number of 5. A useful check: 14 + 23 = 37, the whole-name total. The name has ten letters, so the Habit Challenge is 1. His compound number, 37, is one of the few above 32 that Cheiro gave a meaning of its own: good and fortunate friendships, in love and in partnerships.

On a Western site using the Pythagorean table, the same name totals 57 and gives 3 instead of 1. That single fact explains most of the “why does another website say something different?” confusion.

Namank Kaise Nikale?

Apna naam angrezi akshron mein likhiye — wahi naam jisse log aapko bulate hain. Upar di gayi Chaldean table se har akshar ka ank likhiye, sab jodiye, aur jab tak ek ank na bache tab tak ankon ko jodte rahiye. Jaise ROHIT VERMA ka yog 37 hai, 3 + 7 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1 — to Namank 1 hua. Sirf swaron (A, E, I, O, U) ka yog Heart’s Desire deta hai, aur sirf vyanjanon ka yog Dream number.

Dhyan rahe: kai hindi lekh Namank ke liye alag table istemal karte hain — A = 1 se I = 9 tak kram se, jo Pythagorean paddhati hai. Isliye kisi hindi lekh mein aapka Namank alag aa sakta hai. Ek jaane-maane hindi lekh mein MAHATMA GANDHI ka Namank 1 nikala gaya hai — wo Pythagorean table se hai; Chaldean table se yahi naam 3 deta hai.

Which Name Should You Use?

This is the question that changes results more than any other. In our 600-name sample, the first name alone gave a different Namank from the full name 85% of the time.

The Chaldean tradition answers it clearly: use the name you are known by — the one people actually say. Cheiro’s own worked examples follow this rule. He analysed the British prime minister David Lloyd George under “Lloyd George”, explaining that this was the name he became known and called by, and his successor simply as “Baldwin” — which totals 22. Pythagorean numerology, by contrast, uses your full name from your birth certificate. That difference in rule is itself a reason two sites can disagree.

In practice: if everyone calls you by your first name and surname, use those. If you are known with an initial — as many people in South India are — the initial is part of the name as used. If you have a name for work and another at home, calculate both; the tradition would read the one used most in the part of life you are asking about.

The Compound Number: Cheiro’s Reading of Your Name

Chaldean numerology reads two numbers from one name. Cheiro described the single number as what a person appears to be in the eyes of others, and the compound number — the total before reducing — as the hidden influences working behind the scenes. His book gives meanings for compound numbers from 10 to 52, and the calculator shows the reading for yours. A few of the best known:

CompoundCheiro’s reading (paraphrased)
10The Wheel of Fortune — honour and self-confidence; plans tend to succeed, with rises and falls.
13Change of plans and place. Cheiro insists it is not unlucky, as generally supposed — but it is power that must be used well.
16The Shattered Citadel — a warning of sudden reversals.
19The Prince of Heaven — one of the most fortunate: happiness, success and honour.
23The Royal Star of the Lion — success, and help and protection from those above you.
26Grave warnings — losses through partnerships, bad advice and speculation.
27The Sceptre — authority and command; reward for your own ideas.
37Good and fortunate friendships in love and partnership.
43Upheaval and strife — Cheiro calls it unfortunate.
51The warrior — sudden advancement for leaders, with strong enemies.

Three things about the compound numbers are rarely mentioned, and all three come straight from Cheiro’s own text.

Most numbers above 32 have no meaning of their own. Cheiro wrote that 33 has “no potency of its own” and reads as 24; 34 reads as 25, 35 as 26, and so on up to 52, which reads as 43. Only 37, 43 and 51 carry separate meanings. Some websites give every number from 33 to 52 its own detailed description — those descriptions are not Cheiro’s. This calculator shows the number each one reads as.

His list stops at 52. A long full name can total more; a total of 64 simply has no compound reading in his book, and the calculator says so rather than inventing one.

Cheiro added names word by word. In his Lloyd George example, he reduced each word first — LLOYD to 9, GEORGE to 7 — and added those to reach a compound of 16. Adding every letter together instead gives 43. The final single number is 7 either way, but the compound reading changes completely: the Shattered Citadel in one case, Cheiro’s “unfortunate” 43 in the other. Across our sample, the two methods gave a different compound for 98% of two-word names. Most calculators — including the main one used here — add every letter, so the calculator also shows the word-by-word compound whenever it differs. It is a good reason to hold any single compound reading lightly. For the full 10-to-52 list, see our Chaldean Numerology Calculator.

What Each Name Number Means

These meanings describe the Destiny number, or Namank — the name number read in Indian practice. Each is linked to a ruling planet: 1 the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. (Western numerology links 4 and 7 with Uranus and Neptune instead.)

Name Number 1 — the Sun

A 1 name is a name of initiative. People tend to expect decisions from you, and you are often the one asked “so what do we do?” when a group stalls. The strengths are self-reliance and visibility; the difficulty is sharing credit, and asking for help before a problem has grown. A practical observation: 1-named people frequently do their best work where results carry their own name — a business, a byline, a department they built. In the planetary friendship table, 1 is friendly with more birth numbers than any other, which is why it suits both the Mulank and the Bhagyank of about 62% of people.

Name Number 2 — the Moon

A 2 name is a name of tact and partnership. You come across as easy to talk to, quick to sense a mood, and more interested in agreement than in winning. The strengths are diplomacy and imagination; the risk is waiting for approval before acting, and good plans that stay plans. Hindi guides often describe 2 as gentle and imaginative but in need of steady encouragement. It is also the rarest name number in our sample, at 3% — because this calculator keeps master numbers, a name can only reach 2 by totalling exactly 20; totals such as 29, 38 and 47 stop at 11 on the way.

Name Number 3 — Jupiter

A 3 name is a name of expression and optimism. Jupiter is the planet of the guru in Indian tradition, and 3 names are often associated with teaching, advising and encouraging others. You come across as warm, articulate and hopeful. The difficulty is focus — many beginnings, fewer finishes — and a tendency to talk through a problem when it needs doing. In practice, 3-named people are often the ones others quietly go to for advice, which is both a gift and a drain.

Name Number 4 — Rahu

A 4 name is a name of steady work and unconventional thinking. You come across as dependable and serious, with an independent streak that does not follow the crowd. Cheiro wrote that 4 is not considered a fortunate number: people under it are often misunderstood, work hard, and meet opposition to their plans. This is the name number Indian name-correction advice most often tells people to avoid — and by the friendship table, 4 suits both birth numbers for only about 1 person in 77. The honest counterpoint: those are traditional judgements, not observed outcomes, and many 4-named people build exactly the patient, lasting work the number describes.

Name Number 5 — Mercury

A 5 name is a name of quickness and communication. Trade, travel, conversation and change come naturally; you come across as lively, curious and hard to pin down. The strength is adaptability; the difficulty is restlessness, and commitments that feel like cages. 5 is widely treated in India as a flexible, “friendly” name number, and by the friendship table it suits both birth numbers for about 29% of people — second only to 1. A grounded observation: 5-named people often do well in roles that change every week and struggle in ones that never do.

Name Number 6 — Venus

A 6 name is a name of warmth and responsibility. Home, family, beauty and other people’s comfort tend to gather around you; you come across as kind, reliable and quietly stylish. The strength is care; the difficulty is taking on too much of it, and resenting it later without saying so. 6 is uncommon as a name number (4% of our sample), for the same reason as 2: totals of 33 stop at the master number rather than reducing to 6.

Name Number 7 — Ketu

A 7 name is a name of depth and independence. You come across as thoughtful, private and a little hard to read, drawn to study, research and questions without easy answers. The strength is insight; the difficulty is distance — people may mistake your reserve for coldness. In practice, 7-named people often become the expert others consult in one narrow field, and do their best thinking alone.

Name Number 8 — Saturn

An 8 name is a name of ambition and endurance. You come across as capable, serious and built for responsibility; authority tends to come, but slowly and through effort. Tradition describes 8 as a much-misunderstood number, and it is the other name number — alongside 4 — that Indian name-correction advice frequently discourages. The balanced reading: Saturn is the planet of delay and discipline, not of failure, and 8 describes someone whose results arrive later and last longer.

Name Number 9 — Mars

A 9 name is a name of energy and courage. You come across as driven, protective and quick to take up a cause; people feel your intensity before they know you well. The strength is fearlessness; the difficulty is temper, and fighting battles that did not need fighting. Although no letter in the Chaldean table is worth 9, a name can still total 9 — about 12% of our sample did.

Name Number 11

In Western numerology, 11 is a master number of intuition and inspiration, and this calculator keeps it rather than reducing it to 2 — the same rule as our Destiny calculator. Cheiro, however, read the compound 11 as a warning of hidden trials and treachery from others. A practical way to hold both: an 11 name describes heightened sensitivity, which can register as insight or as anxiety depending on how it is used. About 8% of names in our sample landed on 11.

Name Number 22

Western numerology calls 22 the master builder — the number of large plans made real. Cheiro read the compound 22 very differently: a good person misled by the folly of others, a warning of illusion and false judgment. The overlap between the two is worth noticing — both describe large visions; they differ on whether those visions are grounded. Cheiro’s own example was the name Baldwin, which totals 22.

Name Number 33

Western numerology reads 33 as the master teacher and healer. Cheiro gave 33 no meaning of its own: it reads as 24, which he counted as fortunate — help from people of rank, and gain through love. In our sample, 6% of names totalled 33 — more than totalled 22 — because two-word Indian names commonly add up to the thirties.

Heart’s Desire and Dream Numbers at a Glance

The Heart’s Desire (from the vowels) describes what you want inside; the Dream number (from the consonants) describes how you come across. When the two match, what people see is broadly what you are after. When they differ, the gap is the most interesting part of the reading.

NumberHeart’s Desire — what you want insideDream — how others see you
1To lead and be your own personConfident and direct
2Closeness, harmony and being understoodGentle and approachable
3To express yourself and share joyFriendly and lively
4Security, order and something solid to buildReliable and serious
5Freedom, variety and new experienceQuick and sociable
6Love, home and people to care forWarm and responsible
7Understanding, quiet and deeper truthReserved and thoughtful
8Achievement, respect and securityCapable and commanding
9To serve a cause larger than yourselfGenerous and idealistic
11, 22, 33A calling, a lasting work, or healing others (master)—

Rohit, from the example above, has a Heart’s Desire of 5 and a Dream number of 5: what he wants — freedom and variety — is exactly what people see. The Heart’s Desire keeps master numbers (the name TEENA, for instance, has vowels totalling 11), while the Dream number is always reduced, matching our Soul Urge and Personality calculators. Whether Y counts as a vowel is genuinely disputed; the calculator treats it as a consonant unless you tick the box, and for names like Priya or Vijay it is worth seeing both.

The Habit Challenge Number

The Habit Challenge — also called the security number — is the simplest number in name numerology: count the letters in your name and reduce the count. It is read as the strength you fall back on under pressure: 1 takes charge, 2 calms people, 3 keeps hope alive, 4 holds things steady, 5 adapts, 6 looks after everyone, 7 thinks it through, 8 handles the practical side, and 9 sees the bigger picture.

One honest observation. Because it depends only on how many letters a name has, not which letters, the Habit Challenge mostly measures length. RAHUL and VIJAY share one, and so do any two names of the same length. In our sample, two-word Indian names ran from 7 to 13 letters, so their Habit Challenge landed on 1, 2 or 9 77% of the time and never on 5 or 6. Treat it as a small extra, not a verdict.

Master Numbers in a Name: Two Traditions Disagree

This is the disagreement most name-numerology pages do not mention. Western numerology treats 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers — more intense and more demanding versions of 2, 4 and 6 — and many Indian calculators have adopted that convention, some describing a master number in a name as simply “more powerful and good”. Cheiro, whose book defined the Chaldean system, did not use master numbers at all. In his compound list, 11 is a warning of hidden trials, 22 a warning of illusion, and 33 has no meaning of its own.

This calculator keeps master numbers in the Namank and Heart’s Desire, to stay consistent with our Destiny and Soul Urge calculators, and shows Cheiro’s reading beside them whenever they appear. That affects a real share of people: in our sample, 16% of names landed on a master number. If yours is one, you are not choosing between a lucky and an unlucky name — you are seeing two traditions read the same total differently.

Does Your Name Suit Your Date of Birth?

The most common question in Indian name numerology is whether a name “matches” the person. The traditional test uses the friendship between planets: your name number should be a friendly number of your Mulank (from your birth day) and, ideally, of your Bhagyank (from your full date of birth). The calculator runs this test when you add your date of birth, using the same table as our other calculators.

Mulank or BhagyankFriendly name numbers
1 (Sun), 3 (Jupiter), 9 (Mars)1, 2, 3, 9
2 (Moon)1, 2, 5
4 (Rahu)1, 4, 7, 8
5 (Mercury)1, 5, 6
6 (Venus), 8 (Saturn)5, 6, 8
7 (Ketu)1, 5, 7

We counted what this rule actually does across every date of birth from 1926 to 2026. Some name numbers fit far more people than others: a name number of 1 suits both birth numbers for 62% of people, 5 for 29%, 2 for 22%, 3 and 9 for 12% each, 8 and 6 for about 10% each, 7 for 5% — and 4 for just 1.3%. For about 1 date in 7, no name number suits both. And when we tested our 600 real names against real birth dates, only about 1 name in 5 suited both numbers.

Put plainly: if this rule decided anyone’s fortunes, four people in five would need a new name. That is worth remembering when a name that “does not match” is used to sell a correction.

Should You Change the Spelling of Your Name?

Adding or doubling a letter to shift the Namank is common in India, and many public figures are said to have done it. There is no evidence that it changes outcomes; the tradition itself says a name works through use, which is also why it recommends the name you are known by.

If you are curious, three practical points. First, experimenting is free — you can calculate any spelling here in seconds. Second, a spelling that differs from your official documents can cause real problems with your Aadhaar, PAN, passport or bank records, so try a new spelling informally before changing anything official. Third, paid numerology services in India can be expensive — one listing on a large Indian business marketplace charges ₹24,000 to choose a single “lucky” mobile number — and no service can promise what the tradition itself cannot demonstrate.

Why Another Calculator May Give You a Different Number

  • The letter table. Chaldean and Pythagorean values differ for most letters; the single number differed for 88% of our sample. Many Hindi articles use the Pythagorean order (A = 1 to I = 9) even when they call the result a Namank.
  • Which name. Chaldean uses the name you are known by, Pythagorean your full birth name. First name and full name gave different numbers 85% of the time.
  • Master numbers. Some sites keep 11, 22 and 33; others reduce them; Cheiro did not use them.
  • The letter Y. In our sample, 41% of Indian names contained a Y — and counting it as a vowel changes the Heart’s Desire and Dream numbers.
  • Letters or words. Adding every letter and adding each word’s number give different compound numbers for almost every two-word name.
  • Variants of the “Chaldean” table. Hindi guides describe more than one tradition — Cheiro’s, Sepharial’s and the Pythagorean — and they do not even agree on whether any letter should be worth 9.

Common Misconceptions

  • “The Chaldean table is thousands of years old.” The table in use today dates from the early twentieth century; it assigns values to letters that did not exist in ancient Babylon.
  • “A master number makes a name powerful and lucky.” Western numerology reads it as intensity; Cheiro read 11 and 22 as warnings. The traditions disagree.
  • “Name numbers 4 and 8 must be changed.” That is a common piece of advice, not an established finding.
  • “If my name does not match my Mulank, it will bring bad luck.” By that rule, about four names in five would not match.
  • “Every site should give the same Namank.” Six genuine choices — above — mean they often will not.
  • “Name numerology is a proven science.” It is a traditional belief system, best used for reflection and curiosity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my name number?

Give each letter its Chaldean value (A, I, J, Q, Y = 1 up to F, P = 8), add them all, and reduce to one digit. The calculator above does it instantly and shows every step.

What is Namank?

Namank is the Hindi term for the name number — the Destiny number worked out from all the letters of your name. It is read alongside your Mulank and Bhagyank.

Should I use my full name or my first name?

Chaldean numerology uses the name you are known by, and Cheiro’s own examples follow that rule. Pythagorean numerology uses your full birth name. It is worth checking both, since they usually differ.

What is the Dream number in numerology?

The Dream number is another name for the Personality number: the total of the consonants in your name. It describes the impression you make on others, as distinct from the Heart’s Desire, which comes from the vowels.

Which name number is lucky?

No number is lucky for everyone. Traditionally, a name number is considered favourable when it is friendly with your Mulank and Bhagyank; 1 and 5 fit the most people by that rule. Add your date of birth to the calculator to see which numbers suit yours.

Is name number 4 or 8 bad?

Cheiro described 4 as unfortunate and much misunderstood, and Indian name-correction advice often discourages 4 and 8. These are traditional judgements rather than observed results, and both numbers also describe patience, discipline and lasting work.

Why does a Hindi article give me a different Namank?

Most often because it uses the Pythagorean table (A = 1 to I = 9) rather than the Chaldean table, or a different form of your name. Both are in use in India.

Can changing the spelling of my name change my luck?

There is no evidence that it does. If you want to experiment, try a spelling informally before changing any official document, and be cautious of paying for name correction.
