What Is a Mulank?
“Mul” means root and “ank” means number, so the Mulank is your root number. It also goes by birth number, psychic number and driver number. In Indian numerology it sits alongside two other core numbers: the Bhagyank, from your full date of birth, which is read as your longer life direction, and the Namank, from your name, which is read as how you come across to others. The Mulank is the most personal of the three, the side of you that shows up without effort.
Each Mulank is ruled by one of the nine grahas of Indian astrology: 1 the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. The qualities traditionally linked to that planet are said to colour your nature, which is why reading a Mulank is really reading a planet through a number. Because only the day counts, you share your Mulank with everyone born on the same group of days in any month and any year.
Be aware that names get mixed up online. One large Indian site calls the Mulank your “Life Path Number”, which on most sites, including this one, is the Bhagyank. Another headlines its Mulank tool as a “Personality Number” calculator, although in name numerology the Personality Number comes from the consonants of your name. On this site, the Mulank is always the reduced birth day, and nothing else.
How Is Your Mulank Calculated?
Take the day of the month you were born. If it is a single digit, that is your Mulank. If it has two digits, add them, and keep adding until one digit is left.
- Born on the 7th: already a single digit, so Mulank 7.
- Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, so Mulank 5.
- Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so Mulank 2.

Here is a full worked example using the calculator’s optional fields: born 23 March 1992. The Mulank is 2 + 3 = 5. The Bhagyank adds every digit of the date: 2 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. So this person has Mulank 5, Mercury, and Bhagyank 2, the Moon. Notice that the Bhagyank passed through 11 on the way down. Many Life Path calculators stop at 11 and treat it as a master number; this calculator reduces it to 2, as our Lucky Number calculator does, and tells you when that happens.
Why Another Calculator May Give You a Different Mulank
For most people every calculator gives the same Mulank, because the arithmetic is so simple. The differences come from a few choices worth knowing about.
- The 11th and 22nd. Most Indian numerologists reduce every birth day to 1 to 9, and so does this calculator. At least one Hindi numerology guide keeps 11 and 22 as “master” Mulanks for people born on those days, while still reducing the 29th to 2 through 11, which is not consistent, and it even refers to people born on the “33rd”, a day that does not exist. About 1 birth date in 15 falls on the 11th or 22nd, so the choice affects a real number of people.
- The Western Birthday Number. Western numerology has a close cousin of the Mulank, the Birthday Number, but it is not reduced at all: if you were born on the 29th, your Birthday Number is 29, so there are 31 of them rather than 9. If a Western site gives you a two-digit “birthday number”, that is why.
- Different names for different numbers. A site that calls your Mulank your “Life Path” or your “Personality Number” may be giving you the right number under the wrong label, or the wrong number under the right one. Check what it actually adds up.
- Different meanings for the same number. The Indian tradition this page follows reads 3, Jupiter, as disciplined, dutiful and drawn to authority, while Western numerology and many English sites read 3 as creative, sociable and expressive. Neither is a calculation error; they are two traditions describing the same digit.
- The date you enter. This is the one that matters most in India, and it has its own section below.

Each description covers the planet, the qualities traditionally linked to it, how it shows up in daily life, and where it tends to go wrong. Read them as tendencies to reflect on, not fixed judgements, and remember that everyone carries some of all nine.
Mulank 1: The Leader (Sun)
Born on the 1st, 10th, 19th or 28th, a Mulank 1 carries the Sun’s qualities: confidence, independence, originality and a natural pull towards leading. These are people who start things, take charge without being asked, and dislike being told how to do what they are already doing. Where it goes wrong is ego and impatience: deciding for everyone, hearing disagreement as a challenge, and finding it hard to say “I was wrong”. The growth for a 1 is learning that sharing credit costs nothing. It is also the most common Mulank of all, because four days in every month reduce to it: in our count, 13.1% of birth dates.
Mulank 2: The Sensitive (Moon)

They read moods quickly, prefer harmony to conflict and are often the friend people confide in. Where it goes wrong is that sensitivity turned inward: taking a neutral remark as a slight, going quiet instead of saying what hurt, and hesitating over decisions until the moment has passed. Moods can rise and fall like the Moon’s phases, which the tradition sees as part of the nature rather than a flaw. People born on the 11th or 29th are the ones master-number sites sometimes read differently.
Mulank 3: The Disciplined (Jupiter)
Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th, a Mulank 3 carries Jupiter, the planet of teachers, wisdom and dharma. In the Indian reading this page follows, that means a disciplined, responsible and knowledge-loving person who respects order and often rises into positions of guidance. Where it goes wrong is the teacher’s shadow: lecturing, giving advice nobody asked for, and being hard on people who do not follow the rules. This is the number where traditions differ most, since Western numerology and many English sites describe 3 as creative, sociable and expressive instead. If the Western description fits you better, that is a genuine difference between systems, not a mistake in your number.
Mulank 4: The Rebel (Rahu)
Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st, a Mulank 4 is linked with Rahu, the shadow planet of the unconventional and the unexpected. These are practical, hardworking people with a strong streak of independence, who question accepted ideas and often see solutions others miss. Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank: How They Fit Together
Your Mulank comes from the day you were born and is read as your everyday nature. Your Bhagyank, the Life Path number, comes from your whole date of birth and is read as the direction and lessons of your life. Your Namank comes from your name and is read as how you come across. The first two never change; the Namank changes if your name does, which is why name numerology exists at all.
Numerologists often look at how the Mulank and Bhagyank sit together. When they are the same number, the traits of that number are said to show up especially strongly; when their planets are friends, life is said to feel more aligned; when they are traditional enemies, some describe a tension between who you are and where life is taking you. What Our Own Calculation Shows
We ran every calendar date from 1 January 1960 to 31 December 2025, 24,107 dates in all, through the Mulank and Bhagyank calculations, and compared the two planets using the classical planetary friendship table from Vedic astrology. This is our own calculation on the calendar, not a survey of people.

Three findings stand out. First, the Mulank and Bhagyank are the same number for only about 1 date in 9. Second, a clearly harmonious pairing, whether the same number, mutual friends or a friend and a neutral, covers 36.6% of dates, while some degree of enmity covers 22.0%. Third, more than a third of dates cannot be judged by the classical table at all, because Rahu and Ketu, the rulers of 4 and 7, are not part of it. If a site gives you a confident verdict on a Mulank 4 or 7 pairing, remember that it is using a table of its own.
Two more facts from the same count. Mulank 1 is the most common, at 13.1% of birth dates, followed by 2 and 3 at 12.9% and 4 at 11.8%, because the 28th to 31st give those numbers an extra day; each of 5 to 9 covers 9.9%. And about 1 birth date in 10 falls on the 11th, 22nd or 29th, the days where master-number rules can change the answer.
Which Date Should You Use?
Numerology assumes you know the day you were born. In India that is not always true, and the date on your documents may not be your real birth day.
- Dates chosen for paperwork. For people who do not know their exact date of birth, India’s Aadhaar authority records only the year and, by policy, takes the date of birth as 1 January of that year. News reports have described a village in Uttar Pradesh where most residents’ Aadhaar cards show a 1 January birthday. Estimated ages converted into dates have produced the same round dates for many people. A 1 January date on a document gives Mulank 1 on paper, but numerology is meant to use the day you were actually born. If you know it from family records, a horoscope or a hospital certificate, use that.
- Born between midnight and sunrise. The calendar date changes at midnight, but the Hindu day in the Panchang runs from sunrise to sunrise. Someone born at 3 a.m. on the 15th is on the 15th by the calendar and still on the 14th by Panchang reckoning. Numerology calculators, including this one, use the calendar date; if you also follow a jyotishi, it is worth knowing which they use.
- Born abroad or in another time zone. Use the local date where you were born, not the date in India at that moment.
Common Misconceptions About Mulank
- “Mulank and Bhagyank are the same.” They come from different parts of the date and match for only about 1 date in 9.
- “My Mulank is my Life Path number.” Some sites say so, but the Life Path number is the Bhagyank, from your full date of birth.
- “A Mulank can be 11 or 22.” Not on this calculator, or for most Indian numerologists. A few sites keep them, and the Western Birthday Number keeps the whole day, which is why you may see them elsewhere.
- “Every source describes each Mulank the same way.” The Indian and Western traditions differ, most of all for 3 and 4.
- “Mulank 8 means a hard life.” The tradition links Saturn with patience and delayed reward, and 1 in 10 birth dates has Mulank 8. It is a temperament, not a sentence.
- “The date on my Aadhaar decides my Mulank.” Numerology uses the day you were actually born, and many documented dates in India are estimates.
- “My Mulank decides my life.” It describes tendencies. Choices, circumstances and effort matter far more.
