Toilet Vastu Calculator: The toilet is where Vastu is strictest, because it is the one room whose whole purpose is to carry things away. Put it where the energy supports that, and it quietly does its job. Put it in a zone that governs something precious — clarity, health, money, relationships — and Vastu holds that it slowly drains that area of life.
The calculator checks all sixteen zones. It also asks something most toilet calculators never do: whether the room holds a toilet, a bath, or both. In Vastu those are genuinely different things with different rules, and in Indian homes, where they usually share one room, confusing them is the source of most bad advice.

The short answer: Toilet (WC) — best in the West-North-West, excellent in the South-South-West, good in the East-South-East · Bathing area — best in the East and East-North-East · Strictly avoid for a toilet — North-East, South-West and the centre · Commode — sit facing North or South.
Why Toilet Direction Matters in Vastu
Every zone of a home carries an element and governs an area of life. A toilet carries a heavy, outgoing energy — waste and drainage — so the aim is to place it where that energy does the least harm and helps carry negativity out, rather than where it sits on top of something the household depends on. That is why toilet placement is taken so seriously, and why the difference between a good position and a poor one can be just a few degrees.
Bathroom and Toilet Are Not the Same Thing
This is the most useful distinction on this page, and it is almost always missed.
Vastu treats bathing and the toilet as separate functions. Bathing is about water and cleansing, and water belongs to the north and east. The toilet is about waste, and waste belongs to the zones that carry things away — the west-north-west, the south-south-west, the east-south-east. Traditionally the two were built as separate rooms, and bathing rooms were placed on the east side of the house partly so that one could bathe and then offer water to the rising sun.
The clearest example is the east-north-east. For a bathing area with no WC, it is one of the best zones in the house. For a toilet, it is one to avoid. Same zone, opposite verdicts — because the rooms are doing opposite things.
| Toilet (WC) | Bathing area only | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Carries waste away | Cleansing with water |
| Best zones | WNW, SSW, ESE | East, East-North-East |
| Also good | — | North, NNE, NE, ESE, the north-west belt, West |
| Avoid | NE, SW, N, E, NNE, ENE, centre | SW, SE |
So which rules apply to your bathroom? The calculator now asks. If the room is toilet only, toilet rules apply. If it is bathing only, bathing rules apply — which is why a shower room on the east side of a house can be perfectly good Vastu. And if it is both together, as most Indian bathrooms are, the WC decides, because it is the stricter of the two.
Inside a combined bathroom
This is where most people can actually act. You usually cannot move a bathroom, but you can often choose where each part sits within it. Put the WC on the south or west side of the room and the shower or bathing area on the north or east side, with the washbasin and mirror on the north or east wall. That arrangement honours both sets of rules inside one room, and it is worth planning for during any renovation.

Why Popular Advice Says “North-West” and This Calculator Says “West-North-West”
If you have read other Vastu advice, you will have seen it again and again: the north-west is the ideal direction for a toilet. This calculator rates the north-west proper only “not ideal” and puts the west-north-west at the top. That looks like a contradiction. It is actually the clearest demonstration of why sixteen zones matter.
The traditional eight-direction system has one zone called “north-west”. The sixteen-zone system splits that same area into three: the west-north-west, the north-west proper, and the north-north-west. They govern very different things:
| Zone | Governs | For a toilet |
|---|---|---|
| West-North-West | Letting go, releasing stress | Best |
| North-West proper | Support and help from others | Not ideal |
| North-North-West | Attraction | Acceptable with care |
Because the west-north-west is genuinely the best toilet zone in the house, the whole blurred “north-west” of the eight-direction system picked up its reputation. The popular rule is not wrong so much as low-resolution. Build your toilet in the part of the north-west that faces west and you get the benefit; build it in the part facing north and you are placing it on the zone of support. An eight-direction tool cannot tell you which you have.
All 16 Zones for a Toilet
| Zone | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| WNW | Best | Zone of letting go; the natural place for a toilet or septic tank |
| SSW | Excellent | Zone of waste disposal |
| ESE | Good | Churning zone; helps clear stale thoughts |
| NNW | Acceptable with care | Zone of attraction; WNW is better |
| S | Acceptable with care | Workable if kept clean and dry |
| W | Acceptable with care | Zone of gains — workable at home, avoid in an office or shop |
| NW | Not ideal | Zone of support; the popular “north-west” rule really means WNW |
| SSE | Not ideal | Fire zone |
| WSW | Not ideal | Zone of savings |
| SE | Not ideal | Fire and cash zone |
| ENE | Best avoided | Refreshment zone — excellent for bathing, not for a toilet |
| N | Best avoided | Career and money |
| E | Best avoided | Social connections and health |
| NNE | Best avoided | Health and immunity |
| SW | Strictly avoid | Relationships and stability |
| NE | Strictly avoid | The most sacred zone — the most serious toilet fault in Vastu |
The North-East: the most serious fault
A toilet in the north-east (Ishanya) is one of the gravest faults in all of Vastu. It is the most sacred zone, governing clarity, health and prosperity, and a toilet there is believed to disturb all three. If yours is here, the remedies below matter most.
The South-West and the centre
A toilet in the south-west harms stability and relationships, as this is the zone of bonding and foundation. The exact centre of the home, the Brahmasthan, must never hold a toilet — it is the energetic heart of the house.
The West — a note for homes that are also workplaces
The west is the zone of gains, so a toilet there is workable in a home but may reduce them. If you run a business from home, or this is a shop or office, treat the west as a zone to avoid for a toilet: gains are the whole point of a business. Our Office Vastu Calculator applies this stricter rule.
Toilet Seat (Commode) Facing Direction
The commode should be placed so that the person using it faces north or south. Facing east or west — towards sunrise or sunset — is traditionally discouraged. If your commode faces east or west, turning it is one of the few structural corrections worth making during a renovation, since it involves only the fitting, not the room.
It is worth knowing that a minority of sources suggest facing north or east instead. The large majority, and the reasoning about the sun’s path, favour north or south, which is what the calculator uses.
Washbasin, Geyser, Drainage and Door
Washbasin, mirror and geyser
The washbasin, taps and mirror belong on the north or east wall. The geyser and electrical fittings, being fire-related, suit the south-east corner. A washing machine suits the south-east or north-west.
Drainage and door
The floor should slope so water drains towards the north or east. The door is best on the north or east wall, opening outward. Keep it closed and the lid down when not in use, run an exhaust fan, and never let a bathroom share a wall with, or sit directly above or below, the pooja room or the kitchen.
Where Should the Septic Tank Be?
The septic tank belongs in the west-north-west — the same zone that makes the best toilet location, and for the same reason. As with the toilet itself, advice that says simply “north-west” is the blurred eight-direction version; the western part of the north-west is the zone that matters. Keep the tank well away from the north-east and south-west, out of the exact centre of the plot, and not touching the compound wall.
Attached Bathrooms, Stairs and Upper Floors
An attached bathroom follows the same rules within the bedroom: the WNW, SSW or ESE corner of the room is best, and the north-east and south-west corners should be avoided. A toilet should never be built under a staircase, which combines two heavy, draining influences. In a multi-storey home, make sure an upper-floor toilet does not sit directly above the pooja room, kitchen or main bedroom, or over the north-east of the floor below. Stacking toilets in the same zone on every floor keeps the layout clean.

Colours and Other Tips
Light, clean colours suit a bathroom — white, cream, light grey and pale blue. Avoid very dark shades and heavy reds. Keep it spotlessly clean and dry, fix leaking taps promptly (a leak is traditionally read as a steady drain of wealth, and it is also simply a waste of water), and ventilate it well.
Common Toilet Vastu Mistakes
- A toilet in the north-east — the most serious of all.
- A toilet sharing a wall with the pooja room or kitchen, or directly above one on the next floor.
- A toilet door left open, facing the main door or the kitchen.
- A commode positioned so the user faces east or west.
- Following the “north-west is ideal” rule and building in the north-west proper rather than the west-north-west.
- Treating a bathing room and a toilet as the same thing — and rejecting a perfectly good east-side shower room as a result.
- A leaking tap or damp wall left unrepaired.
Remedies for a Toilet in the Wrong Direction
Do not rebuild in a hurry. The single most important remedy is cleanliness: a clean, dry, well-ventilated toilet does far less harm than a neglected one in a good zone. Keep the door closed and the lid down, run an exhaust fan, fix leaks, and use light colours. A bowl of sea salt, changed regularly, is a traditional remedy for a difficult toilet, particularly one in the north-east. If you are renovating, the two worthwhile changes are turning the commode to face north or south, and moving the WC to the south or west side of a combined bathroom.
Be cautious of anyone selling expensive tapes, metal strips or devices to “neutralise” a toilet. The genuine remedies here are cleanliness and arrangement, and they cost next to nothing.
A Quick Bathroom Checklist
- Is the WC in the WNW, SSW or ESE — and never the north-east, south-west or centre?
- If it is a bathing-only room, is it on the east or north side?
- In a combined bathroom, is the WC on the south or west side and the shower on the north or east?
- Does the commode face north or south?
- Are the washbasin and mirror on the north or east wall, and the geyser in the south-east?
- Does water drain towards the north or east?
- Is the door on the north or east, kept closed when not in use?
- Is the room clean, dry and well-ventilated, with no leaks?
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the correct direction for a toilet in Vastu?
The west-north-west is best, followed by the south-south-west and east-south-east. Avoid the north-east, south-west and the centre above all.
Is the north-west good for a toilet?
The popular rule says so, but on the sixteen-zone system the north-west proper is the zone of support and only “not ideal”. The genuinely good zone is the west-north-west, the western part of that area.
Is a bathroom the same as a toilet in Vastu?
No. A bathing area follows water rules and suits the east and north; a toilet follows waste rules and suits the WNW, SSW and ESE. In a combined room, the WC’s rules decide.
Can a bathroom be in the east?
A room used only for bathing, with no WC, is traditionally ideal in the east or east-north-east. A toilet there is best avoided.
Where should the WC go inside a combined bathroom?
On the south or west side, with the shower or bathing area on the north or east side and the washbasin on the north or east wall.
Why is a toilet in the north-east bad?
The north-east is the most sacred zone, governing clarity, health and prosperity. A toilet there is considered one of the most serious faults in Vastu.
Which direction should the toilet seat face?
Place the commode so the user faces north or south. East and west are traditionally avoided.
Where should the septic tank be?
In the west-north-west — the same zone that makes the best toilet location. Keep it away from the north-east, south-west and the centre of the plot.
Can I fix a wrongly placed toilet without breaking walls?
Yes, in most cases. Cleanliness, a closed door and lid, good ventilation, fixed leaks and light colours address most concerns. Turning the commode is the most worthwhile fitting-level change.
Is a toilet under the staircase a problem?
Yes — it is best avoided. If it already exists, keep it spotless, well-lit and ventilated, with the door closed.
Does the toilet Vastu calculator really work?
It reliably identifies the zone, applies the right rules for a toilet, bathing room or combined bathroom, and has been checked against our verified sixteen-zone reference. The guidance itself is traditional belief, not proven science.
