What Is the Facing Direction in Vastu?
A home’s facing is the direction its main entrance opens towards: the way you look as you walk out. Vastu gives the main door special weight, calling it the mouth of the home, the place where people, light and, in the tradition, energy and opportunity come in. That is why the facing sets the starting conditions for a Vastu reading, and why the exact position of the door along its wall matters as well.
In an independent house, the facing is read at the main door. In a flat, most consultants read the flat’s own main door, and one property guide goes as far as saying the building’s gate should be ignored; others also look at the building’s entrance as a second factor. Eight Directions and Sixteen Zones
The classical texts work with eight directions, each with a guardian deity: Kubera in the north, Ishana in the north-east, Indra in the east, Agni in the south-east, Yama in the south, Nirriti in the south-west, Varuna in the west and Vayu in the north-west. Many modern consultants divide the circle more finely into sixteen zones of 22.5 degrees, a map best known from the contemporary MahaVastu method, which adds the eight in-between zones such as north-north-east and east-south-east. How to Find Your House Facing
- Calibrate your phone compass. Most phones ask you to move the phone in a figure of eight; do it once before measuring.
- Stand just inside the main door and face out. Look straight ahead as if you are about to leave, with the door frame square in front of you.
- Hold the phone flat and away from metal. Steel almirahs, grills, fridges, inverters and wiring can pull the reading. Remove steel keys and bangles from the hand holding the phone.
- Read the degrees and repeat. Take two or three readings a little apart. If they agree within a few degrees, average them; if they disagree widely, something metallic is interfering.
- Type the degrees into the calculator. It places the reading in its zone and warns you if it is within 2 degrees of a boundary.
You do not need to correct for true north. India’s Class 12 physics textbook gives the difference between magnetic and true north as only about 0°41′ east at Delhi and 0°58′ west at Mumbai, and it stays within about two degrees across the country. That is far smaller than the 11.25 degrees either side of the centre of a zone.

The Three Most Common Mistakes
- Reading the wrong way round. The facing is the direction you look while stepping out, which is the opposite of the direction you walk while coming in. Get it backwards and a north-east home becomes a south-west one. The calculator’s result always names the opposite zone, so you can check.
- Trusting a reading on a boundary. A reading of 11° is north, but 12° is north-north-east. When a reading sits within a couple of degrees of a boundary, take more readings before deciding.
- Using a chart with different boundaries. Some websites draw sixteen zones starting at 0° instead of centring them on the directions, so their north runs from 0° to 22.5°; others still use eight directions of 45 degrees, with north from 337.5° to 22.5°. A reading of 238°, for example, is west-south-west on the centred chart used here but south-west on a chart that starts at 0°. Check which chart a source is using before comparing results.
How Accurate Does the Reading Need to Be?
Less accurate than some sites claim, but not careless. One widely read Vastu article says that a difference of even 3 or 4 degrees makes the whole 16-zone calculation wrong. In fact, a small error only changes the zone when the reading is close to a boundary. By our count, a 4-degree error would change the zone for about 36% of possible readings, the ones within 4 degrees of an edge, and leave the rest untouched. Another guide puts magnetic declination across India at up to 5 degrees; the official textbook figures above show it is well under one degree in Delhi and Mumbai. The practical rule is simple: take a few readings, keep metal away, and pay attention when the calculator warns that you are near a boundary.
What Each Facing Means in Vastu
These are the traditional readings this calculator gives, grouped by its three verdicts. A facing describes starting conditions, not a fate; the internal layout of a home matters at least as much, and almost every facing can be made to work.
Highly Auspicious and Favourable Facings
North is ruled by Kubera, the lord of wealth, and north-facing homes are traditionally linked with money, career and new opportunities. East faces the rising sun, the direction of Indra, and is traditionally linked with health, growth and social standing; it is one of the most sought-after facings for families. North-east, the corner of Ishana, is treated as the most sacred of all, provided that corner of the home stays clean and light. The in-between zones north-north-east, linked with health, and east-north-east, linked with recreation, share this favourable reputation. West, the direction of Varuna, is traditionally described as bringing steady gains and stability, and this calculator rates it favourable.
Workable Facings
South-east, the fire corner of Agni, is linked with cash flow and energy and works well with careful door placement. South-south-east, the zone of strength and confidence, and west-south-west, the zone of study and savings, are workable with the right layout. South, the direction of Yama, carries more fear than it deserves, as the next section explains. North-west, the zone of Vayu and of support from others, is variable but often favourable, and north-north-west, linked with attraction, is workable with a calm, well-kept entrance.
Facings That Need More Care
East-south-east, the zone of churning and anxiety, and west-north-west, the zone of letting go of stress, are traditionally said to need a bright, orderly entrance. South-south-west, the zone of disposal and expenditure, needs a solid, clutter-free approach. South-west, the heaviest and most grounding direction, is the one facing Vastu is least comfortable with, because this corner is traditionally meant to be closed and solid; it asks for the most careful layout.
Is a South or South-West Facing House Really Bad?
No direction is simply bad, and the fear around south-facing homes has been exaggerated for years; even mainstream Hindi newspapers and consultants now say so. In the 32-entrance system, two of the recommended door positions, S3 and S4, lie on the south side, which is why the calculator lists them for a south facing. South-west facing is genuinely the one the tradition asks most care for, but that means careful planning, not panic.
There is also a practical side that has nothing to do with belief. In India, south- and west-facing fronts take the strongest sun, and one of the country’s largest cement makers advises its readers that such homes can run hotter, suggesting light colours, plants and good ventilation. Deep shading, a verandah, trees and cross-ventilation make any south- or west-facing home more comfortable, which is a sound reason to plan them carefully whatever you believe about directions.
What Our Own Calculation Shows
Because the zones are fixed slices of the compass, a few useful facts can be worked out exactly. These are our own calculations on the compass, not a survey of homes.
- How the verdicts divide the circle. Of the 360 degrees, 135 fall in facings this calculator rates highly auspicious or favourable, 135 in workable ones and 90 in those needing care. South-west alone is 22.5 degrees, one sixteenth of the circle.
- Reading the wrong way round changes the verdict half the time. For half of all possible readings, the opposite direction has a different verdict: north, north-north-east, north-east and east-north-east all turn into facings that are rated lower. East and west, south-east and north-west happen to share a verdict with their opposites.
- Boundary readings are common. About 18% of possible readings lie within 2 degrees of a zone boundary, and about 36% within 4 degrees.
- Charts disagree on names for half of all readings. A 16-zone chart that starts at 0° instead of centring each zone gives a different zone name for exactly half of all compass readings.

Simple Ways to Make Any Entrance Better
- Keep the entrance clean, well lit and clear of shoes and clutter.
- Repair a jammed, cracked or creaking door; a sound, welcoming door is the simplest traditional remedy of all.
- Add a threshold, a nameplate and, if you like, a toran or an auspicious symbol.
- Keep the north-east of the home light and open and the south-west solid and heavier.
Be wary of anyone who says a facing can only be fixed by expensive objects or by demolishing walls. A bright, tidy, well-maintained entrance is good for any home.
