What Is a Vastu Score?
A Vastu score measures how closely a home follows the placement guidelines of Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian system of architecture and direction. Each of the sixteen zones — zones of 22.5 degrees each, a finer map than the usual eight directions — carries a particular energy and suits particular uses: the fiery south-east for cooking, the grounding south-west for sleeping, the sacred north-east for prayer. When a home’s key placements match these ideals, the tradition holds that it supports health, prosperity and peace.
The ideas go back to the Vastu Purusha Mandala, the sacred diagram in which a cosmic figure lies across the plot with different parts of the body governing different zones. A modern score is a much simpler descendant of that thinking. It does not attempt the full precision of the classical system, but it carries the same core idea: the right activity in the right direction.
Treat it as a health check rather than a verdict. It is a traditional belief system, not an exact science, and no calculator replaces an on-site look at a home you are seriously reworking.
Why a High Score Cannot Hide a Serious Fault
This is the most important thing to understand about any Vastu score, and it is where most online calculators — including an earlier version of this one — go wrong.
A score works by adding points. That is fine for minor placements, but it creates a real problem with the serious ones. When we tested our old calculator, we found that every one of the most serious faults in Vastu — a toilet in the north-east, a kitchen in the north-east, a main door in the south-west, a staircase in the north-east and the rest — could sit in a home that still scored around 90 and was told it had “Excellent Vastu” and aligned “very well” with Vastu principles.
That cannot be right. Our own Toilet Vastu page describes a north-east toilet as one of the gravest faults in the whole tradition. A good living room and a well-placed overhead tank do nothing to cancel it — they are simply different rooms. Adding their points together produced a reassuring number that was, in plain terms, false.
So the calculator now treats the most serious placements as limits, not just low scores:

When a fault holds the rating down, the result tells you exactly which one, and the matching suggestion is marked “Serious” and shown first. That is more useful than a flattering number: it tells you where your attention will actually matter.
The serious faults
These are the placements the traditional sixteen-zone framework marks as strict prohibitions — the ones no good score elsewhere can offset:
- A toilet in the north-east or south-west
- A kitchen in the north-east or south-west
- A main door in the south-west
- A staircase in the north-east
- A pooja room in the south or south-west
- A borewell or underground tank in the south-west
- A master bedroom in the north-east
If none of these apply to your home, your score is a fair reflection of its balance. If one does, it is worth addressing first — ahead of everything else the calculator suggests.
How the Calculator Works
It asks where ten of the most influential elements of a home sit among the sixteen zones. Each answer earns up to 10 points depending on how closely it matches the Vastu ideal — full marks for the ideal zone, a solid score for a good alternative, few points for a poor one. The points add up to a total out of 100 (a perfect home genuinely reaches 100), which is then placed in a band from “Excellent” to “Significant Issues”, subject to the serious-fault limits above. Wherever a placement falls short, you get a specific suggestion.

The Ten Placements That Shape Your Score
1. The main entrance
The main door is the mouth of the home. The north, east, north-east and west are the traditionally strong entrance zones, and the south-west is the weakest. But for a door, the zone is only an approximation: each zone spans two door segments, or padas, and in several zones those two segments mean opposite things. The east, for instance, is auspicious only in its northern half. 2. The kitchen
The kitchen is ruled by fire, so its ideal zone is the south-east, the direction of Agni. The north-west is a good alternative, and the south and south-south-east are workable. 3. The master bedroom
For rest and stability, the master bedroom belongs in the south-west, the heaviest and most grounding zone, with the south-south-west, west-south-west, south and west also good. 4. The pooja room
The north-east is ideal for prayer, with the north, east, north-north-east and east-north-east excellent. The south and south-west are strictly avoided. So are three zones many calculators wrongly allow: the west-north-west (the stress zone, best suited to a toilet), the north-north-west (the zone of sensual attraction) and the east-south-east (the zone of anxiety). 5. The main toilet
The west-north-west is the best toilet zone, the south-south-west excellent and the east-south-east good. The north-east and south-west are strict avoids, and the north, east, north-north-east and east-north-east should be avoided too. Much popular advice says simply “north-west” — that is a blurred eight-direction version of the rule; the precise zone is the west-north-west, while the north-west proper is only middling. 6. The underground water source
Borewells, sumps and underground tanks belong in the north-east, north or east — the water zones. The south-west is a strict avoid, and the south-east is best avoided too.
7. The overhead tank and heavy storage
Weight belongs in the south-west and west, which should always be the heaviest parts of a home. An overhead tank or heavy store there adds stability. The north-east should stay light and low.
8. The living room
The living room is best in the north, east or north-east, which keep it bright and welcoming, with the north-west good for receiving guests. Avoid the west-north-west — traditionally, sitting areas should not be placed in the stress zone.
9. The staircase
Staircases carry a heavy, downward energy and belong in the south, west or south-west. Keep them out of the north-east — a strict avoid — and away from the exact centre of the home.
10. The Brahmasthan (centre of the home)
The centre of a home is its energetic heart. Ideally it is open, light and free of clutter, heavy furniture, pillars and toilets. Of all ten questions, this is the easiest to improve, since clearing clutter costs nothing.

Remember the limits: a home with one serious fault is rated at most “Good” and one with two or more at most “Moderate”, whatever the number says. A lower rating is not a cause for worry — it simply shows where attention will have the most effect.
How to Improve Your Score
Most improvements do not need construction. In rough order of what makes the biggest difference:
- Deal with any serious fault first. Usually this means changing what a room is used for rather than rebuilding — turning a north-east store room into a pooja space, or keeping a north-east toilet scrupulously clean, closed and ventilated if it cannot move.
- Clear the centre and the north-east. Decluttering these two areas is free and is among the most effective changes in all of Vastu.
- Move what can be moved. A bed, a mandir, a gas stove within the kitchen, a desk — shifting these into their correct zones often costs nothing.
- Keep the south-west heavy and the north-east light. Move heavy furniture and storage towards the south-west; keep the north-east open, bright and low.
- Improve light and ventilation in the north and east.
Be cautious of anyone who looks at a low score and offers an expensive remedy — devices, strips, crystals or yantras sold to “fix” a placement. The genuine improvements are almost all rearrangement and cleanliness, and where a placement truly cannot change, doing what you reasonably can is enough. Vastu is meant to bring calm, not anxiety.
Vastu Scores for Flats and Apartments
The same principles apply to a flat — you assess the placements within your own unit, measuring directions from the centre of the flat rather than the building. Some questions, such as an underground water source or a staircase, may not apply to you. If a question does not apply, choose the answer closest to your situation, or simply use the score as a rough guide and focus on the placements that do apply.
Common Misconceptions About Vastu Scores
- “A high score means my home has no serious problems.” On most calculators, not necessarily — a north-east toilet can hide behind a total of 90. This one limits the rating when a serious fault is present.
- “A low score means my home is cursed.” It simply shows where placements differ from the ideal, and most can be improved easily.
- “A Vastu score is precise.” It is a guide based on tradition. Different systems weigh placements differently.
- “The entrance zone tells me everything about my door.” For a door, the exact segment on the wall matters more than the zone.
- “I must rebuild to fix my Vastu.” Rarely. Changing room use, moving furniture and decluttering address most concerns.
- “Vastu is scientifically proven.” It is a traditional belief system, best used for guidance and harmony.
