Vastu treats a workplace the same way as a home: as a grid of sixteen zones, each governing one quality. The north-east governs clarity and growth, the south-west stability and authority, the south-east cash flow, the west gains and profits. The principle is simple — put each function of a business in the zone whose quality matches it, and work is believed to run more smoothly. Decisions feel steadier, money moves more predictably, staff focus better. The same logic applies to a single cabin, a small shop or a full office floor.
The Owner’s or Director’s Seat
The single most important placement in office Vastu is where the person who makes the final decisions sits.
Seating zone: South-West
The owner or senior-most decision-maker belongs in the south-west (Nairutya) — the zone of stability, authority and grounding. Senior managers can sit in the south, west or west-south-west. The owner should not sit in the light north-east, north or east, which lack the grounding leadership needs.
Two zones deserve a specific warning. The west-north-west is the zone of stress and depression in MahaVastu — the zone recommended for toilets because it carries unwanted things out. The east-south-east is the zone of anxiety and mental churning. Neither is a place for the person whose judgement the business depends on.
Facing direction and the wall behind
Seated, the owner should face north or east. Just as important, there should be a solid wall directly behind the chair — not a window, a glass partition or an open corridor. A solid back is read as support and security. Avoid sitting with your back to a door, and avoid a beam directly overhead. South-west seat, solid wall behind, facing north or east: that is the foundation of the whole layout.
Safe or Cash Counter? Why Money Advice Contradicts Itself
Read enough Vastu advice about money and you will find it flatly contradicting itself. One page says keep cash in the north. Another says the south-west. One widely read property article manages to say, in the same piece, both that you should avoid placing the cash counter in the south-west and that you should keep it there.
The contradiction almost always comes from treating two different things as one. Vastu distinguishes between them clearly:

Seen side by side, the “contradiction” disappears. A safe in the south-west and a cash counter in the south-east are not competing rules; they are rules for two different objects. An earlier version of our own calculator made exactly this mistake — it marked the south-west as “best avoided” for cash while its own advice on the same screen said a safe in a south-west room should open north. The two are now separate options.
The one point nearly every source agrees on is the opening direction. Whatever the zone, the safe door and the cash drawer should open towards the north, the direction of Kubera. If you change only one thing about your cash arrangement, change that.
There is genuine disagreement on one detail: a minority of sources argue the safe itself belongs in the north, since north is Kubera’s direction. Most answer that north suits the opening rather than the location, because a heavy safe sits better in a heavy zone. The calculator follows the majority and treats north as acceptable for a safe rather than ideal.
Reception and Entrance
The reception is the first impression a business makes, and it belongs in a bright, open zone — the north-east, north or east, with the north-north-east, east-north-east and west also good. The main door of an office, like a home’s, is most auspicious on the north, east or north-east.
The zones to avoid are the south-west, south-south-west and west-south-west — the three weakest entrance positions in the traditional scoring. Notice that the plain south is not on that list. The belief that south-facing entrances are unlucky is widely described as a myth, including by Vastu practitioners, and a south entrance placed in the right segment of the wall is perfectly workable. Employee Seating and Workstations
Staff work best facing north or east — the directions of focus and energy. Workstations suit the north, east, north-east, east-north-east and north-north-east, with the west and north-west also good. Sales and marketing teams, whose work involves movement and outreach, are well placed in the north-west, the zone of movement and networking.
Two zones to keep staff out of. The south-west belongs to the owner and senior staff. And the west-north-west — the stress and depression zone — should not hold seating at all. Many online office Vastu tools rate it as good for workstations, simply because it sits next to the acceptable north-west. The sixteen-zone system exists precisely to tell those two apart.
Conference and Meeting Room
A meeting room suits the north-west or west. The north-west, governed by air and movement, fits the discussion and back-and-forth of meetings; the west supports conclusions and gains. Inside the room, the senior-most person should face north or east. Avoid the south-west (the owner’s zone), the fiery south-east, and again the west-north-west stress zone — not the place to be making group decisions.
Storage, Pantry and Toilet
Storage and records
Heavy cupboards, records and archives belong in the south-west, south, west or west-south-west — the heavy zones. Weight in the south-west reinforces the stability of the whole office. Keep the north-east, north, east and east-north-east free of heavy storage.
Pantry
A pantry or kitchenette is a fire function and suits the south-east, like a home kitchen. The north-west, south and south-south-east are workable alternatives. Avoid the north-east, north and north-north-east — and strictly the south-west, which traditional Vastu forbids for any kitchen.
Toilet — and why the West matters in an office
The best zone for an office toilet is the west-north-west, the zone that carries unwanted things out. The south-south-west, the zone of disposal, is also excellent, and the east-south-east is good. Avoid the north-east, south-west, north, east and north-north-east — and the exact centre.
One zone deserves special mention for a business. The west is the zone of gains and profits, and traditional teaching is direct about it: a toilet there reduces gains. In a home that is a minor concern; in an office, whose whole purpose is gain, it is the one placement to avoid most. It is worth saying plainly because many office Vastu calculators — including an earlier version of ours — rate the west as ideal for a toilet, apparently because it sits near the correct north-west zones. That is precisely the kind of error the sixteen-zone system is meant to prevent.
The Centre and General Layout
Three whole-office principles tie everything together. Keep the centre — the Brahmasthan — open and clutter-free; no heavy furniture, store or toilet there. Keep the north-east light, open and low, a good place for reception, a water feature or simply open space. Keep the south-west heavy and solid, with the owner’s cabin and storage. A light north-east and a heavy south-west is the heart of office Vastu, whatever the size of the space.
Vastu for Shops and Retail
Shops follow the same logic, adjusted for the counter. The entrance is best on the north, east or north-east. The owner sits in the south-west facing north or east, ideally with a view of the entrance and the customers. The cash counter goes in the north or south-east with its drawer opening north; a separate safe for the day’s takings goes in the south-west, also opening north.
Heavy stock belongs in the south and west. Keep the north-east light and open, and use it to display attractive, fast-moving items to draw customers in. Electronics suit the south-east, the fire zone. Keep the entrance bright, the shop clean and the centre clear. In a small kirana shop where the owner sits at the counter, the practical answer is usually simple: owner and counter together in the south-west corner, facing north or east towards the door, with the cash drawer opening north.
Vastu for a Home Office
A home office or study suits the north, east or north-west of the home. Sit facing north or east with a solid wall behind you, keep the workspace out of the bedroom where you can, and keep good natural light from the north or east. Avoid working under a beam or with your back to the door, and keep the centre of the room clear. Setting up in the west-north-west corner of a room, because it happens to be free, is worth avoiding for the same reason as in an office.
Colours and Other Tips
Light, neutral shades — white, cream, pale green, light blue — keep an office calm and focused; a touch of yellow adds optimism. Dark or aggressive colours are best used sparingly. Keep the space well lit and ventilated, fix flickering lights and leaking taps promptly, and clear out dead plants, broken furniture and clutter. A few healthy plants in the north or east and an organised desk do more than any single rule.
Remedies for Office Vastu Problems
Most offices cannot be rebuilt, and do not need to be. If the owner cannot sit in the south-west, put a solid wall behind the chair and face north or east wherever they sit. If the safe is in the wrong place, at minimum turn it so it opens north. Move staff out of the west-north-west corner if anyone is sitting there. Keep the north-east and the centre clear, add light and plants to the north and east, and move heavier items towards the south-west. Turning desks so staff face north or east is a free change that needs no construction and addresses the single most common problem.
And the usual caution: be wary of anyone who inspects an office, pronounces its Vastu seriously wrong, and then sells an expensive remedy. The genuine remedies here are rearrangements, and they cost nothing.
